MED-Routes Package for sustainable practices and eco-itineraries in Mediterranean Cultural Routes
The tool provides a methodological framework to help Mediterranean destinations replicate sustainable practices and develop eco-itineraries within the MED-Routes initiative. It aims to promote circular and sustainable tourism along Cultural Routes by guiding destinations in planning, designing, promoting, and monitoring eco-itineraries. It also supports the integration of circular economy principles, the adoption of the Green Label, stakeholder participation, and the transfer of successful models and tools from INCIRCLE and EMbleMatiC.

The tool applies in pilot destinations through structured collaboration with local stakeholders, including working groups, consultation workshops, and capacity-building activities. Its implementation supports sustainable route planning, spatial mapping and signage, the integration of eco-friendly mobility solutions and the promotion of eco-certified accommodation facilities. Digital applications and online platforms are used to facilitate access to information and enhance visitor engagement. Promotional activities include regional campaigns, increased visibility of eco-certifications, collaboration with influencers, and educational initiatives. The tool is relevant for destinations aiming to align tourism development with circular economy principles and the sustainability pillars defined in the package, supported by monitoring activities such as impact assessment, feedback mechanisms, and periodic audits.
Replicability conditions
Replicability depends on forming stakeholder groups, conducting participatory processes, and applying the circular economy principles outlined in the package. Destinations need to be capable of mapping their cultural and natural assets, planning routes that are sustainable, encouraging eco-friendly ways of getting around, and backing local SMEs and cultural organizations. Also requires capacity for training, consultation, monitoring, and evaluation using the indicators and toolkits. Because the package builds on transferable models from INCIRCLE and EMbleMatiC, it can be adapted to different Mediterranean Cultural Routes as long as local contexts can support these processes.
