The Green Beach Model
The Green Beach Model builds on existing beach management efforts (Blue Flag Programme, ISO 13009:2015, etc...) to define the nature standards, characteristics and criteria that a beach must meet to be considered sustainable. It uses 24 indicators in 8 categories and foresees the implementation of some small infrastructures. The aim of this action was to support beach operators in making better-informed decisions about managing their beaches using a consistent approach based on best practices, providing guidance in establishing benchmarks for beach management and safety.

The implementation of the “Green Beach” model is based on eight key categories – Bathing Water Quality, Beach Area Quality, Safety, Information, Sustainability, Green Facilities, Accessibility, and Management – all aligned with sustainable development principles. The process begins with a systematic audit to establish baseline conditions and to identify areas requiring intervention. An action plan is developed, specifying activities, timelines, financial allocations, and stakeholder responsibilities. Local authorities are tasked with the execution and monitoring of this plan, ensuring regular documentation through standardized sheets and supporting evidence. With a maximum score of 850 points, a beach must achieve at least 550 points to be certified as a Green Beach.
Replicability conditions
MITOMED+ has provided a list of indicators to allow other areas to assess the status of their beaches. Rely on adequate human resources, supporting tools, infrastructure and organizational capacity. Implementation requires trained staff, proper facilities and equipment and technological and regulatory frameworks to ensure consistent application across different destinations.
